We were primed for a big game against Beaumaris at their ground. The last time we played them they certainly gave us a run for our money and with their finals aspirations depending on games like this they would be fired up. The game was an arm wrestle with both teams feeling each other out. They had the better of the play in the first half but were again inaccurate with our pressure a factor. Late in the second quarter we got our game going through good ball movement and went in at the half not too far away. We had a good third quarter with Downie starting to get on top as well as Rivett Jamison and Mitchell. In the last quarter we scored well with good contribution from our entire side. We were able to get away with a 20 point win which was very pleasing. Our defenders stood up well with Kerr and Clarke leading the way. Up forward Downie and Halsall who was very dangerous got 4 goals each and Jelbart 3. We look forward to Old Geelong next week

The Stars were lucky enough to host a home Semi Final in front of a supportive crowd against a determined Brighton outfit. The Stars eventually ground out a solid victory to put themselves through to their second consecutive Grand Final on Sunday August 18th. The victory was built on fierce tackling and swift ball movement from half back which broke the game open late in the game. Mia Cowan adjudged a clear best on ground playing across half back and was well supported by the hard-working midfield group of Pip Silverii, Lucy Morley, Anna Hayes, Mimi Hill and Greta Larkey.

Last Saturday down at the Sharks home ground was a lackluster affair. In a game that didn’t reach any great heights we came away with a solid 7 goal win. If you said to me prior to this season that we would get two wins over the reigning B Reserves Premiership team I would have taken that. As they say in the classics, a year is a long time in football. Regardless, there were a few good performances, Tim McMillan and Jono Daggian both made a solid contribution. Charlie Schilling worked hard across all areas and Jono Aujard is starting to get back to his best form. We will take the win and move on.

Round 15 saw us hosting another foe in St Kevins and we welcomed another debutant to the team. Oscar Cirulis is another from the Camberwell Sharks footy factory as well as being a co-captain with Lachie Purcell at Camberwell Grammar this season. After watching and being inspired by the Scotch Stars in their 2nd semi-final triumph, the boys came out of the rooms pumped up with ACDCs Thunderstruck blaring across Boroondara!!
We expected a tough tussle with St Kevins in the first quarter and they came to play by in front by 11 points at the first break. This was a disappointing opening for, so plenty to work on with our 1st quarters moving forward. After some honest feedback at ¼ time, the Scotch boys responded extremely positively with 6-goals straight to no score by St Kevins. Connor Goodison was the one to light up the opening minutes of the 2nd quarter with some real energy in the forward 50; and he was ably supported by Piers McDermott who brought his own footy in the midfield. A great sign for a talented young footballer in his comeback from a knee reconstruction in 2018.
In the second half, we kicked a further 7.10 to 1.1 to be victorious by 70 points. Our emphasis wasn’t on the end result, rather, in our ball movement and run from the half-backline. This was another level of improvement from the team as we are now starting to gel strongly with so many new faces playing together for the first time. It has been extremely pleasing to see the development of Domenic Cirillo (recruited from Mildura) and Zac Oliver (recruited from Ballarat) in recent weeks as they have setup a number of attacking plays from our defensive end. This week we head to Bulleen to take on Old Carey and we look forward to the challenge.

Old Scotch 4.7 (31) defeated by Kew 4.16 (40)
Goal Kickers: L. Stoll 3, E. Montgomery
Best Players: C. Hocking, L. Glover, C. Pelusi, J. Lupson, L. Fish, D. El-Khoury
The under 19(2)s came up against second placed Kew, with a win keeping us in the hunt for a second change in the finals. The first quarter was hotly contested with both teams showing aggression and pressure around the ball early. Scotch managed to score the first goal after repeated entries eventually put too much burden on the Kew defence. Kew managed to gain ascendency in the second half of the quarter but poor kicking in front of goal kept them to only a 4 point lead at quarter time.
The second quarter Scotch managed to move the ball at will with a focus of going through the corridor. Hocking and Glover owned the middle of the ground and consistently got the ball in our forward 50. The forward line were able to convert three goals however this could have been more as the Kew defence were able to rebound quite well due to inefficient kicks into the 50. A mark and goal on the siren to Kew put a dampener on what otherwise was a great quarter Scotch, a lead of 4 points at the break.
The third and fourth quarters were not dissimilar from the first with both teams having a non-stop arm wrestle. The pressure around the ball made it near impossible to score with many rushed kicks and rushed behinds, however Kew were able to get one in the third giving them a 1 point lead at 3 quarter time. The fourth quarter saw Scotch two players short due to injury, meaning the mids had to work overtime. Scotch fought valiantly to the end however Kew scored the only goal of the quarter, running out 9 point victors.
Scotch have now lost 5 games by less than 10 points which shows that we need to be better in tight contests. Many of those games could have gone the other way if it had not been for our own mistakes. Three losses in a row means Scotch need to turn the form and concentrate on consolidating our spot in the finals.
