It’s tent down Circus over time!
Sadly our season has come to an end, and far too quickly as we had high hopes of playing in our 1st senior Premier A grade finals campaign. Whilst it was great to finish on a high last week beating De La at home on Dunshea in the end too many close losses cost us, maybe we are still not quite A grade hardened to ice the close ones. Losses to St Bede’s by 3 points (R1), Collegians by 1 point (R6) and Scotch by 4 points (R16) hurt us, interestingly in all 3 games we were in very winnable positions. Whilst we can be proud of our defensive improvement in 2012 where we had the 3rd best backline it was our inability to kick wining scores that has cost us, we only had the 7th best forward line.
On the up side we gave 48 players senior games in 2012 and blooded 11 new senior players, all being former Carey Grammar students. On top of this we were able to field 4 teams, having made the transition from a Club 18 team to a 3rds team in 2012, albeit with a lot of work from our mighty 3rds coach, Ian Ocka England.
Other notable achievements this season included:
- Howat, Smithwick, Rowe, Remington and McQueen-Miscamble all playing VAFA senior representative football, with Cam Howat as the VAFA Captain.
- Simpson and Harris both playing VAFA U23 rep football
- Simon Harris playing U19 representative football
- Game 3 in the Legend series, who will ever forget those boys.
In addition to this we received great news during the week that our gallant senior co-captain, Cam Howat was awarded the VAFA’s Premier A section Woodrow medal as the best player in the competition for 2012. This is just reward for Cam who had a fantastic season and has been an absolute role model to his team mates.
There was plenty to admire about our brave 2nds players who played some very good football at times this year without necessarily being rewarded with a win. Despite this every player who played 2nds showed improvement and can look to 2013 with confidence. The Unders battled on all season despite terrible luck with injury, seemed every week another player would go down with a season ending injury. Results aside we have some emerging talent and we look forward to watching the new generation of Panthers evolve in 2013 and beyond. Our 3rds was the surprise packet, despite the multiply weekly changes due to late injuries, call-ups and unavailability, the team was competitive every week and responded despite the challenges.
Special acknowledgement must go to our senior coach, Trevor Rowe and his assistants, Richard Oppy, Travis Derricott and Stuart Kofoed all of whom have done a wonderful job in representing the club with integrity and pride. Their combined passion together with that of 2nds coach Jon Rimington, 3rds coach Ian England and Unders coach Michael Ericson has ensured Old Carey remains a quality club, and well respected with the VAFA community. The same can be said for our Team Managers, magnificent trainers and all of our game day volunteers.
On the subject of thanks, to all of our generous sponsors, supports and friends, we say thanks for sticking with us in 2012 and we urge you to keep the faith next year as we do everything possible to return the favour and go deeper into September 2013!
