The Panther train rolls on
Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and a Saturday away from football, I know I certainly did. It’s amazing when you realise how much time and energy goes into the football season. For us, despite being amateurs we have been running our program since early November 2013. Sure we have had several breaks since then but there has been a lot of focus and energy directed to our program for 7 months and we are not yet at the half way mark of the season in terms of games played. Enough on that, but the truth is that we wouldn’t be involved (playing, coaching, administering or supporting) if we didn’t share a common bond.
Let’s talk footy now and what happened in R8. Whilst we collected 3 wins it was a gripping day for our seniors and 2nds up against the Old Haileybury. Despite not having played them since 2011, there is still a lot at stake when we do play each other. This stems back to our historic Premier B Grand Final victory in 2010, in that season we played Haileybury 3 times and won on each occasion, the trend continue in 2011 before they were relegated back to B grade. I’m sure in their minds they still owe us and they certainly played in that fashion last week. We won the seniors game by 4 points in a nail bitting last quarter where Haileybury stormed back into the game with a 5 goal quarter, got the lead but only to see Happy Laidlaw kick the winning goal for us. It was a timely return for Happy, lining up a full forward and kicking 5 goals in a match winning performance. The 2nds played a great last quarter to run out 5 goal winners, they kicked six unanswered goals to run away deserved winners, just reward for the groups hard work and self-belief. The 3rds came up short against Old Brighton who look to be a very good team, (so they should given their seniors play in Premier A). The Unders came to play and accounted for a dangerous AJAX. Seems the Unders were in for a great day and they finished up well at the Unders party later that night at Michal Mitchells’ home in Kew (all 100 of them).
There was plenty to get excited about over the long weekend, with the news filtering through of a baby Parton! Dolly and Katie have a new baby son; Mason James Parton arrived June 1st at Epworth Freemason. So the blood line is assured and we are already looking at jumper numbers for our prized new Panther recruit, albeit in 2034! Dolly may be a father but Katie has now has two children to look after, Mason and Al! This will make for good watching and this picture is the place to start.
Looking to this weekend we are again away. The senior teams play the dangerous AJAX down at Albert park, AJAX seniors have been both hot and cold, this will be another vital game with both teams looking to cement a spot in the top 4. We have a bit to play for with Ben Smithwick celebrating his 100th game for the club plus Simon Lenders doing likewise in the 3rds. The 3rds play away to Caulfield and the Unders take on St Marys Salesian. We are away again next week to OM’s before returning to Carey Bulleen June 28th to take on Mazenod.
Plenty of news to catch up in the articles below, including our boys playing major roles in the VAFA victory over AFL Queensland, so please have a read.
