Goals galore as seniors romp home.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect last Saturday morning ahead of the vital SKOB’s seniors game as news filtered through that Tom Roach was to be another late withdrawal. We were starting to look a bit thin on experience given Tom’s absence coupled with injuries Mathew Laidlaw, Jack Joslin, Jarrod Reid, James Murray, Cam Jones and James Gaff all not playing. The team had been bolstered by the return of Morgan Evans from the VFL. It was an amazing afternoon’s football out on Dunshea but more on that in a moment.
With all teams at home it was going to be another important round for the club, seniors against SKOB’s, 3rds taking on Beaumaris 3rds (despite their seniors playing in Premier A grade) and the Unders welcoming traditional rivals Old Camberwell, coached by Michael Ericson a former OC U19 coach.
Up in Cookie’s Kitchen supporters were treated to another great lunch and some wonderful stories of grass roots football by Melbourne journalist and author of Local Rites and Footy Town, Paul Daffey. Paul recited some great stories, he is a regular on SEN Thursday night at 9.00pm with Mark Fine on the Bush and the Burbs, and here he is being interviewed by Smokey Dawson.
It was another perfect day for football, warm still and sunny and the grounds again fantastic. The 2nds started very well and shot out to a 4 goal lead by quarter time, as has been the case this year 2nd quarters have been a problem and that was the case again. SKOB’s worked themselves back into the game and continued to apply pressure, ultimately winning. Ladder positions would have suggested they win but Wag’s 2nds were competitive at times again, they need to have more self-belief. The 3rds had a great tussle against Beaumaris but in the end a lack of another midfield player cost Ocka and his team late in the 4th quarter. The Unders won but it wasn’t easy, Camberwell pushed Taz’s team all the way, the boys did it tough but ground out the win and now are in 2nd place.
Now to the main game, what a contrast from the previous week’s bad loss to Caulfield. Games are usually won by the team that’s starts well, and we certainly did that, a 7 goal to 1 opening blitz. By games end we had kicked an amazing 26 goals 4 behinds with one rushed. Our foot skills were excellent, needless to say our goal kicking too. It was great to see Joel Rice in full flight with 48 possessions plus Ryan Bongetti play a great game, we had contributions from everyone. Interestingly SKOBs had similar scoring shots to us but the difference was our kicking resulting in a 79 point win. It was a great game and confidence boost for the boys, coaches happy so too the supporters! The scoreboard says it all.
So to this week, seniors and 2nds away to Old Haileybury in must win games, we have some good in’s this week so no excuses. With the long weekend bye next week, it’s time for the boys to run themselves ragged at Old Haileybury’s new ground in south Caulfield. We have had some great matches against OH in recent times including our famous 2010 win in the B grade GF, OH still owe us so we will need to be well prepared. The 3rds host old Brighton (another premier A grade club with 3rds in Premier B) whilst the Unders travel to Albert Park to have a crack at AJAX.
We then get the week off before two more away games. So please come and see the boys in full flight before the break, if they can reproduce last week’s form the seniors will be great to watch again.
