Winter time, that means it's time to work even harder

I don’t plan to bang on too much about last weekend’s games, needless to say the seniors and 2nds were very disappointing.  Taking nothing away from AJAX, they played well and deserved their wins.  It was disappointing week for our senior teams as wins at this time of the season when it’s cold and wet and dark early are money in the bank.  In short two lost opportunities and with vital games to follow we are now under the pump.  Despite remaining 2nd on the ladder the seniors are being hotly chased and now face OM’s at the Junction Oval in a pivotal game.  OM’s played very well against us early this season and will remember the loss they inflicted on us in Premier A grade two years ago at the same ground when we were fighting for a finals spot, so I reckon it will be game on from the get go.  The 2nds will need to find the form they had early on when they beat OM’s, last weekend’s loss was bitterly disappointing.  The 3rds battled hard but could not go with Caulfield whereas the success continues to be the UNDERS who won again convincingly.

The next bracket of games will test most clubs depth; it’s that silly season where the boys head off, some for short holidays and some for long trips to Europe and the US.  We are about to experience that across all teams, frustrating yes but as amateurs the boys believe they can do both in the same season, and their absence it is tough for the coaches to cover, fortunately all clubs face a similar dilemma.

Let’s focus on two great stories about to unfold this weekend.  A fantastic milestone achievement by Al Stewart Holmes in playing 200 games for the club. Secondly the return of James Courtot to the seniors after a three year recovery from 2 knee reco’s.

These two boys warrant a great deal of praise, they share common values: persistence and dedication.  Al is the ultimate clubman, never asking for anything, reliable, popular and dedicated.  Al has been one of the cornerstones of our senior team for several years and is arguably now playing his best football.  James was a vital member of our 2010 premiership team, under 19 at the time James hardness and competitive nature added much to our midfield.  Tragically James did his knee early in the 2011 season against De La.  Determined to get back James spent 12 months in recovery only to do it again late in the 2012 pre-season.  James has done all the work again and has played a number of 2nds games this season and is now ready to have another crack at senior football.

The club is indeed very fortunate to have two quality men in Al Stewart Holmes and James Courtot and we look forward to celebrating their milestone games this weekend for two very different reasons.  Best of luck to Al and James from the extended Panther community.

In other games the 3rds host a depleted Mazenod, I know Ocka and his boys are desperate to get a win, they have been in all games this season and are to be admired for their commitment.  Interestingly some of the other clubs have had to forfeit games in the 3rds, in fact De la in Premier A 3rds have withdrawn from the competition all together.  The Unders juggernaut rolls on; this time away to Old Camberwell in what should be another tight game.
