Panthers hold firm

The scene was set for a great day’s football at Carey Bulleen last Saturday, perfect weather and a big test for the seniors as we hosted the defending A grade premiers Uni Blacks.  With several boys sore after the R1 arm wrestle we were forced to make 3 changes, all hard running players so we would be tested.  The three that came in were all tall and would play important roles throughout the match.  It was a great contest, with us seemingly in control for the majority of the game.  Black’s poor goal kicking particularly in the 2nd quarter would cost them.  We lifted in the 3rd but had to cover the loss of Cam Jones who came off badly concussed, later diagnosed with a cracked eye socket and cheekbone. CJ would have surgery later in the week.  The boys pushed out to a 7 gaol lead and ran out eventual winners despite some 4th quarter goals by Blacks.  The 2nds played 3 quarters of great football only to let it slip in the last; Blacks kicked 5 unanswered goals and got home by 8 points.  The 3rds had another great win on Sunday v Ajax whilst Taz and his Unders played great football to beat a quality opposition away to Williamstown.

The day commenced in great fashion with the reopening of Cookie’s Kitchen, a select group of 40 were thoroughly entertained by guest speaker, Michael Roach ably interviewed by Ian Cohen.  Roachy spoke about his days at Punt Road and some of the colourful characters he has met and played with along the way, and yes that famous mark was bought up, as evidenced below.

Senior Coach, Glen Cox is one for using a catch cry to motivate the boys, last season is was about ringing the sponge out until it had no more water leftin it, this week it’s is all about THE NEW CAREY.  A squad of uncompromising, hard at the ball players prepared to sacrifice everything both applying and withstanding extreme pressure.  This was the theme for last weekend and will no doubt continue throughout the season.

So 3 wins and a close loss was a good outcome, albeit it should have been 4 wins.  This week we are up against cross road rivals in Old Trinity so we can dub this game the BATTLE OF BULLEEN!  Recent matches have been absolute crackers with OT racing out to sizeable leads only for us to reel them in.  OT are an improved team, they have started 2015 well with 2 wins and played some very impressive football in A grade in 2014 so it will a great game with plenty of run as both teams love the big grounds.  On paper the 2nds game should be an even tussle likewise the 3rds, whilst the Unders are away to Hampton Rovers who traditionally field strong Unders.

It looks like being a wet weekend so the grandstand will be full; we have a lunch pre game which will work well as the 2nds are playing on Dunshea.  Being Anzac Day we have planned a ceremony and have invited Carey Grammar student, Liam McCafferty to play the Last Post.  Players from both clubs will form lines of honour and be joined by the VAFA Umpires, this will be followed by a minutes silence.  I ask that you all be involved and stand accordingly.

There’s is a lot to like about our football at the moment, our seniors have been underrated by many in the competition but our opening two games have put them on notice and I know the boys are keen to work hard, play relentless football and prove themselves as being the NEW CAREY!

I look forward to seeing you at Bulleen, rugg up Anzac Day will be another memorable affair!
