Friday 29th August

Sadly Premier Division no more......

As the heading suggest by 5pm tomorrow our 3 year stint in the VAFA’s Premier A grade will come to an end.  And I can hear many opposition supporters saying “told you so” Carey would not be able to sustain their foothold in A grade.  Whilst history will support their statement it will very interesting to see what history will say of us beyond 2013.  If you look at the 2012 relegated A grade teams (Trinity and Caulfield Grammarians) at this season’s end they are polls apart.  Trinity is set to climb back into Premier assuming it wins tomorrow’s 2nd semi-final at Elsternwick Park (having finished top of B grade in the home and away).  By comparison Caulfield lost upwards of 30 players in the off season, only fielding 3 teams in 2013 and were lucky not to do a double drop to C grade, with only 4 wins there better % has kept them up.  So what can we expect…………..time will tell and a lot will rest on the shoulders of the current playing list and how prepared they are to work in the off season.  Player retention and recruitment both from the school pool and beyond will be vital.

We continue to look at ways we can improve and on Tuesday night we held a meeting with the playing group (70 plus attended) where we gave them the full results of the player survey.  The meeting went close to 2 hours and there was a lot of positives to come out of it, ultimately the players do realise they are the biggest drivers of success at the club and they need to fully commit if we are to rebound…………..time will tell.

We had to endure more pain last weekend with big losses to our seniors and 2nds at the hands of Beaumaris, sadly the 3rds were unable to field a side given the clubs mounting injury toll.  The Unders season finished off with a draw, a game they were again favoured to win.  The Unders have been the club’s good story, despite losses they have continued to grow in confidence and under Michael’s coaching the boys have formed a close bound and have work for each other as the season has gone on, well done Michael.  We hope this group will stay on in good numbers in 2014 and set up a tradition for other school leavers to follow.

We return to Bulleen tomorrow and we will welcome our mighty LEGENDS back to the club for their 4th LEGENDS BATTLE.  Cam Matthews has done a fantastic job in arranging these games, it has become a highlight of the season having 60 former “greats” back on Dunshea and in the rooms afterwards for a massive lunch.

It’s fitting that we finish off with games against a strong Premier club in De La Salle, we have had some great contests against De La in the 3 years and we hope to be able to put on a good show on Dunshea tomorrow so too the 2nds who will also play on the main oval.  The LEGENDS will be up in Cookies Kitchen for a big rehydrate after the game and a fair bit of reminiscing.  And of course being our last game means silly Sunday for the players, heaven help them.

So please get to Carey Bulleen for one last weekend’s Panther football fix this Saturday before the fat lady sings and the final siren sounds for 2013.
