That just wasn’t meant to happen, oh the pain!

Football teaches us many things, the joy of winning and the pain of losing.  We need to deal with both these emotions and remember their impact.  Seemed last weekend’s titanic match v Old Scotch delivered a lot of pain, the senior’s loss has hurt both our players and coaches and they must remember the pain, and if in that position again use those memories to drag themselves across the line.

The scene was set for an intense day’s football on Dunshea.  For the seniors there was much to play for, a win would keep us level with Old Scotch and well in the hunt for 4th spot, a loss would really make life difficult.  Whilst for the 2nds some pride was again at stake, having played some excellent football recently, they needed to redeem themselves after last weekend’s Collegians debacle.  The 3rds were again up for a challenge and have been fantastic all season whilst the Unders would be tested away to Haileybury.

Out at Bulleen heavy early rain had left both grounds very wet, whilst the ground staff have all season been able to keep the mud at bay, the continued rain and cold has tested them.  The grounds looked well prepared; all the same it didn’t take long before they were chopped up and very testing for both teams.

We had pumped up the game and invited 96.5 INNER FM to call.  Cookies kitchen was alive with a good crowd enjoying some off the record info from our guest speaker, Hawthorn FC President Andrew Newbold.

The 2nds had played mighty footy, with 3 injured before half time it was always going to be difficult especially against the better placed Old Scotch, regardless the game went down to the wire with Old Scotch winning a close one.

In the seniors, Scotch stated well but we quickly gained some control and lead by 15 points at half time, in hindsight we should have used the breeze better in the 2nd term and been further ahead.  The 3rd Q was a real tussle and at the last break we remained in ascendancy leading by 14 points.  Despite us kicking an early goal Old Scotch seemed to get more of the ball and in the last few minutes snatched victory with two late goals.  Credit to Scotch, it was a gutsy win.

You could hear a pin drop in our rooms after the game as the boys knew they had missed a great chance of winning and staying in touch with Scotch and a finals opportunity.  I’m sure the loss continued to haunt them throughout the weekend and they will use it as the catalysis to play out the remainder of the season.  We are still capable of playing finals so the footy gods will need to be kind to us, all the same we need to learn for the weekend’s disappointment and strive to do better next time.

Looking to this weekend, we are away to local rival Old Trinity, another Battle of Bulleen and I’m sure they would love to inflict some more pain on us.  We have had their measure in recent clashes but we will need to be at our very best to get over them, mind you the incentive is there as we can still play finals if it all falls into place.

Regardless come to Trinity and support our boys, with the 3rds and Unders at Carey there will be plenty of Panther football in the neighbourhood, all we need is you.
