Its all about handling the pressure when it comes
Round 15 done and 3 remaining. Seniors, 2nd and 3rds all lose but Unders get the points. For the seniors it was a much anticipated return game, Uni Blues at Melbourne on the main. Despite the overnight rain and freezing start to the day the ground was in good condition, slippery but ok. Cast our minds back to the R2 encounter 14 weeks ago and the Blues were too good. Their excellent ball use, run and team work ensured they kicked away and registered an 11 goal win. Since then they had lost twice and we had improved.
Despite losing Happy Laidlaw the night before and Courtot rested due to knee soreness we had a good team in. The game was a cracker with OC playing disciplined football, retaining possession and stopping Blues run. We lead by 3 goals at half time and kicked the 1st of the 3rd term. Blues dug deep with Watts a spring board again across half back. Kicking several unanswered goals Blues showed their class and took the lead and held us off. We learnt a lot about how we must play them and the importance of absorbing pressure, Blues were able to do that in the 1st half and turn it on us in the 2nd. Both teams will have got plenty from the game and be keen to have another crack at each other if the cards fall that way come finals time. In the meantime we must now focus our energy on AJAX at home this coming week and revenge the earlier loss.
The 2nds played much better going down to Blues twos who sit atop of the ladder. Like the seniors, our 2nds have improved since the R2 clash and that was evident on Saturday. Old Trinity got one back on us in the 3rds whilst the Unders came from behind to beat St Mary’s in a tense game.
Looking to this week's games we are all back at Bulleen and must press home that advantage. AJAX got the better of us last time in both the seniors and 2nds so we must be at our best, with Blues taking on SKOB’s the top 4 ladder spots are still not settled. 3rds host AJAX and the Unders lock horns again with Old Camberwell. I am told the last time we hosted AJAX at Bulleen was back in 1999 when we were both in Division 1 (D grade), that year we finished 5th and the Jackers won the flag.
Cookie’s not done yet for 2014, this weeks lunch ahead of the AJAX game is locked in with Richmond's VFL coach Tim Clarke confirmed, he hopes to have Damien Hardwick join us as well. AND to close the season out Cookie has landed Rodney Eade for the Legends Lunch on August 16, so please watch out for the invites and RSVP quickly to Kristen at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0433837107.
