Round 2 reality check and timely!
After a clean sweep of wins in Round 1 the club looked to our Round 2 clashes with a great deal of excitement, at home we were greeted to a magnificent Dunshea Oval despite the persistent rain during the week.
The seniors and 2nds had the chance to have another crack at Uni Blues whilst the 3rds were to host Caulfield and the Unders taking on Williamstown CYMS. Off field Cookie’s kitchen trading for the 1st time for 2014 and the 40 that lunched were taken on a wonderful journey by former Hawthorn champion, Peter Knights. Peter spoke of the importance of educating new AFL draftees on values and traditions and how these are still vitally important at Hawthorn. Peter inducts all of Hawthorn’s newly drafted players each year focusing on the club’s history and tradition.
Despite Carey Bulleen being at its best Uni Blues dominated both the seniors and 2nds games winning comfortably. These two losses should be a reality check for our squad; we have had a very encouraging pre-season with excellent numbers on the track. So the Round 1 clean sweep was just reward for our pre season’s hard work but the losses to Blues were significant and we need to do some soul searching, keep working hard on the stoppages and contested ball. There was no denying Blues were very good but there is genuine belief we can get better and learn from their excellent ball use.
The 3rds had upwards of 10 changes from its Round 1 team and played an improved Caulfield, despite the number of changes the boys played some good patches of football and are benefiting from playing in a more compatible standard of football than Premier A 3rds in 2013. The success story of the weekend was our mighty Unders, winning against a well drilled Williamstown CYMS, who had a monster win the week before. Coach Michael Tarrant is doing a great job with the boys and last weekend we welcomed some Yr11 school boys who had no problems adjusting to the age difference and played some exceptional football.
So at home again this weekend and up against OM’s. Despite being winless so far, OM’s will be very keen to register their first win for the season, we need to remember they were a kick away from A grade last year, losing to Old Trinity by a point in the 2013 preliminary final. We need to rebound and start well, it’s an ideal opportunity to put a 2 game break on them and keep ourselves in touch with the top four. Traditionally OM’s field strong teams on the back of good depth so our 2nds will have a challenge too. The 3rds host AJAX after a revised VAFA draw amended during the week whilst the Unders play the Old Xavs other U19 team. We are expecting 4 very good games.
We are set for a marque day at Bulleen, once the School’s Saturday morning sport has finished. Cookie’s Kitchen is open again and this week we are very privileged to have current AFL Chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick join us as our guest speaker, we have a few seats still available so book in QUICK. The senior’s game will be called by 96.5 INNERFM, tune in a see if you can recognise the special comments man. Also listen in at approx. 10.15am on Saturday morning for their VAFA review, or senior coach Glenn Cox is being interviewed. Finally we finish up with post match drinks in our rooms, hopefully with some celebrating to do.
So please make your way to Bulleen and be part of a great day’s Panther football this Saturday.
