WE WERE VERY DISSAPOINTING

Last weekend was very disappointing for our senior teams losing critical games.  There was much to get excited about, with Al Stewart-Holmes playing his 200th game and Ben Smithwick’s 100th the seniors were very keen to do well.  The match was poised nicely in our favour at 3 quarter time, we were two goals down but kicking with the breeze, maybe a 5 goal one.  To OM’s credit they steadied and played with greater desperation running away from us in a similar manner to Caulfield earlier on in the season, it is a worry. The 2nds were in a similar position to press for a win but OM’s won the last quarter decisively.  We are now in the back end of the season and playing crucial games that need to be won if we aspire to play finals as well as avoiding the relegation log jam.  I am convinced we are playing at the right level, Premier B is a good standard and tests us, and we are capable of playing great football but can at the same time lapse and allow the opposition to take charge.  Hopefully our quality will ensure we get more of the ball and use our disposal skills better especially into the forward line.

It was great news for the 3rds who had to endure some average ground conditions out on Bulleen Park #3 oval and somewhat spiteful football to get another win, this time over Mazenod, whilst the Unders powered away from Old Camberwell for another good win, they now sit one game clear on top after Xavs beat Old Ivanhoe.

Away from football I want to share with you the amazing work Cookie has done in the last four years in attracting quality lunchtime guest speakers.  We have very fortunate to have been entertained by this wonderful list of interesting speakers all agreeable to take time out of their weekend and join us for a couple of hours.  Have a look; if I have missed anyone please let me know:

In other news we will be celebrating Nick Colbert’s 100th game this weekend.  Nick has been a stalwart player and great clubman, capable of playing seniors, Nick has devoted his later career playing 2nds in a mentoring role and occasionally time in the 3rds where he gets the chance to play with some of his mates.  Nick came to Old Carey several years ago and quickly became a great Panther member, he is renowned for his booming voice up in the grandstand supporting the seniors and giving the opposition some ‘friendly advice’, congrats Nic.

The VAVA has declared R11 as the UMPIRE APPRECIATION ROUND and has asked that we all take time to recognize the difficult task it is to umpire and appreciate their commitment and professionalism.  The VAFA has instigated for this weekend:

  • All coaching staff to be present with the captains at the toss of the coin.
  • All players to huddle behind their respective captains and coaches.
  • Following the coin toss, umpires will split and proceed to shake player’s hands.

We are all at home this weekend, seniors and 2nds on Dunshea and the 3rds and Unders on Gramlick.  Cookie has again been busy, he has secured former Melbourne FC player and fill in Coach Greg Hutchison to speak with us.  Greg is now the school’s Director of Football and is developing programs to revamp and revitalise the school’s football program across all year levels.

Looking to this weekend, the seniors host Mazenod, this will be a tough encounter, despite a slow start to Premier B grade this year Mazenod have been playing good football recently so it will be game on.  The 3rds take on Fitzroy and the Unders play a big rival in Marcellin.

So please rug up as it’s going to be cold and come out to Bulleen and join us in another vital round’s football.
