Beaten by quality but we showed we have what it takes........

All of a sudden its pressure on for our seniors, 3rds and Unders, the season is winding up fast and we are now in must win games to retain our spots in the top 4 and in finals contention.  The 3rds have already achieved this and only have this week’s game to play before their finals campaign commences next weekend.  The seniors hold down 3rd spot but now have Blues and Xavs hot on our heels.  Unders get a chance this week to test themselves in a top of the ladder game v Old Geelong at Como Park.  Sadly the 2nds just need a win, it continues to be a very tough season for the group, Premier A grade reserves is a very good standard and we have found it hard going staying in games.

Last week’s seniors game v Old Trinity was a cracker and mirrored in many ways the R3 game, we started very well and dominated play, holding a half time lead of 21 points.  We went into the main break knowing Old Trinity would come at us.  Trinity has finished off games very well this season, regularly running over the top of their opposition.  Despite knowing this and preparing we let it happen, disappointingly we were unable to halt their charge again, Trinity are a quality unit, hard runners, skilful and have a great game plan and stick to it.  We know we can match them and will learn from this game, I hope we get to play them again, although that will be up to us as Trinity have locked away their finals campaign whereas we need to win a couple more.  As an aside the team will benefit from the inclusion of Luke Crozier, Will Walker, Dima Dimakopoulos and Tim Smith, all missed the game. Unfortunately for the 2nds the season continues to be a tough one, with upwards of 24 boys now unavailable (injured, overseas or missing) making team selection a nightmare, basically a week to week process dependant on who is available.  All praise to the Under 19 squad who have been able to push excess players up into the 3rds.  Despite the state of the 2nds list/availabilities the team still play with terrific pride and determination, Wags and Derm continue to work with the boys challenging them knowing that they are still capable of good footy and deserved of a win.  The 3rds nailed Fitzroy on Gramlick and gave Geoff Trumbull a great 150th game celebration in the process; Geoff kicked a lazy 6 goals in a BOG performance.  SKOB’s this week then finals.  The Unders played a decent 1st half to keep St Bernards at bay and in doing so moved to 2nd spot and play Old Geelong in a top table clash tomorrow.

A couple of things I want to acknowledge, our arvo tea and home lunches.  All praise Lucy Arthur and the Mums that put on the arvo tea, it is a great initiative and really generates good will amongst the supporters from both clubs that attend.  I was reminded of this last weekend at Old Trinity who didn’t offer an arvo tea.  Secondly OT didn’t put on a lunch, I appreciate the challenges and effort required to run them, all the same it’s another element to the day and offers supporters a terrific environment pregame to socialise and enjoy company, you have to admire the work Cookie does in particular, we are one of very few clubs committed in providing lunches at all home games.

So it really is game on this weekend, in particular for our seniors.  The boys were reminded at selection last night of what happened in 2012.  We were sitting inside the top 4 with 3 games remaining, we hosted Old Scotch at Bulleen on a very bleak cold and wet day and in a low scoring game Old Scotch manufactured a late goal to hit the front for the first time and win.  That win spelt the end of any chance we had of playing finals, they leap frogged us but failed to fire a shot in the finals.  For the record we have never played in an A grade finals series, we are close now but MUST reverse our 2012 fortunes and beat Scotch tomorrow.  Added incentive, a win for us would see Scotch back in relegation mode!

For those that didn’t know the result from last week Round 14:

Seniors: OC 10/10/70 v Old Trinity 12/16/88

2nds: OC 4/3/27 v Old Trinity 22/11/143

3rds: OC 21/8/134 v Fitzroy 9/7/61

Unders: OC 14/14/98 v St Bernards 7/2/44

Cookie has done it again and has landed Mike Sheahan as our luncheon guest tomorrow ahead of the Old Scotch game.  It will be a bit of Mike on Mike as the two have a bar side chat.  So you better get in quick as this one is bound to sell out quick.
