A terrible loss but finals bound regardless for Seniors and Unders

There is no hiding from the fact that our R18 loss to SKOBs was a disaster, sitting 2nd before the game all we needed to do was play smart football and negate the possibility of a bad loss.  With a 4 point buffer and a healthy 10 % point lead over SKOBs and 7% ahead of OM’s the boys need to ensure the game remained close and under control.  Given our early season win over SKOB’s we had every reason be confident of delivering on our plan and early on it was on track.  Despite the breeze and vocal SKOB’s crowd our boys had the game in control at half time.  However SKOB’s came out firing and we simply couldn’t match them, it was a stark contrast to the Round 7 game.  Boiled down we surrender the % lead and now have dropped to 3rd on the ladder and find ourselves in an elimination final v OM’s. SKOB’s on the other hand are rewarded with a double chance and a crack at Uni Blues and a win away from Premier A.

There was a lot of pride on the line as both clubs had come together to play for the inaugural McHarg McKaige trophy in honour of two former club greats who had both passed away in the off season.  SKOB’s had taken delivery of their fantastic new clubrooms at TH King and had invited their 2004 B grade senior and 2nds premiership teams to the lunch and celebrate life 10 years on, hence the big and vocal home crowd.  The photo below is of Richard Hearn addressing the luncheon crowd with some wonderful stories about Andrew McHarg and what football was like then at Old Carey.

Earlier in the day our Panther 2nds were gallant in defeat, their season is now over and there was a lot to like about it especially when compared to 2013.  12 months ago the boys had endured enough, tired and fed up with losing.  We needed an overhaul of our 2nds program and the appointment of James Wagner to coach ably supported by Nick Thompson and Fothers again as TM ensured the boys would have very passionate and supportive off field support and direction in 2014.  As the season has progressed the team has gelled and should have played finals.  With player retention this off season and an influx of over aged Unders plus some newbies I am sure the 2nds will be better again in 2015.

Ocka and his 3rds finished the season off in style smashing Mazenod.  I urge you to read Ocka’s match report as he speaks with a great deal of pride about his boys and their season.  One of only 2 teams to play every match (others forfeited at various stages or were victims of a forfeit) we gave 74 Panthers a chance to play football.  This is the value of 3rds and ensure we keep players at the club.  Having said that it is a massive task to manage so hats off to Ocka, Bear, Darren and Gleddo for their combined passion and commitment.

Unders lost on the road to Williamstown CYMS and now host Marcellin on Gramlick this coming weekend.  Taz has done a wonderful job with the Unders and the focus on a better alignment with the School is paying dividends, we will have several school boys available for selection this weekend.  Hopefully all of Taz’s work will make it a more logical pathway to us when the year 12’s do leave school.

Looking to this weekend the Seniors and 2nds are now in elimination finals, Seniors to lock horns again with OM’s on Sunday at Elsternwick Park (VAFA HQ) and the Unders v Marcellin on Saturday at Carey Bulleen, both 2 pm games.  We will put our best foot forward this week and have a red hot crack; I reckon it’s going to take very good opposition to match us. I know the boys will be up for the challenge.  Finals football is worth the effort and they do know that.

Please join us this weekend as the Seniors and Unders play to keep their finals hopes alive.  Carey Bulleen Saturday then VAFA HQ at Elsternwick park on Sunday, both 2pm starts.
