History in the making for the Seniors
There was always going to be something special about last weekend’s games at Bulleen. Cookie had weaved his magic yet again and landed Tiffany Cherry as our luncheon guest. Being mother’s day weekend, Tiffany was the perfect guest to ensure we had a capacity lunch with an emphasis on a Ladies affair. The 2nds were keen to put on a better showing than the poor effort at Del La whilst the seniors were very keen to test themselves against Old Xavs, the yardstick of A grade for many years. The last time we played Xavs was on Dunshea in 2013 and they handed us an absolute flogging. So the scene was set for a cracking match. Both teams took a while to settle and at quarter time we headed them by 4 points, by half time we pushed out to a 21 point lead, which then blew out to 74 points at 3 quarter time. Early in the last we got it out to 90 plus before Xavs rallied and bought it back to a 10 goal Panther victory at the bell. So history was made, we have never before beaten Xavs at Carey Bulleen and to do it with such emphatic force must give the coaches and players great confidence. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves as we have massive games ahead, starting this week away to Old Scotch. But let’s enjoy that win for one moment, think of Handsy’s joy up in the scoreboard managing the rollers!
Thought you all love this photo as well, Tiffany with baby daughter, Vivienne and Jan Smithwick. Tiffany did a Q&A with Jan. Jan has great sporting pedigree having played basketball for the Opals, including world championships in South Korea and a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament in Bulgaria.
The 2nds played much better despite the one sided result suggested; it was a far improved effort and gives Wags and Derm something to work with. The VAFA community has always questioned our depth but I know the 2nds group can play good football and are prepared to work hard. The list will be bolstered by the return of CJ and Luke Crozier, both very tall and athletic. Luke the perfect replacement for Lachie McQueen-Miscamble who is set to go overseas for a year after Sat week.
The 3rds came up against a very good Xavs 3rds unit, it’s their 2nd 3rds team and comprises boys all U23, needless to say they had plenty of run and fitness, the score suggested this, all the same Ocka was again proud of his 3rds boys. Taz and his Unders got a valuable away win at Ormond. Always a difficult venue to win at, our Unders played great composed football and now sit entrenched in the top 4, big test this week as they take on ladder top Old Geelong.
This week’s game at Old Scotch will commence a tradition whereby the two clubs compete for the Bendigo Community Bank cup. Both clubs are sponsored by the Bank of Bendigo Community Bank, which is overseen by Mr Dick Menting, Director and CEO of the Canterbury Surrey Hills Community Finance Ltd, operator of the Canterbury, Ashburton, Surrey Hills and Balwyn Bendigo Bank Community Bank® branches. The bank is committed to support the local community and is very generous with its sponsorship. So in recognition both clubs have agreed that a cup be struck to acknowledge the Bank’s generous contribution to the community and in particular our two clubs. So please join us at the Camberwell Sport as we take it up to and hopefully away from Scotch. We invite all supporters to attend the game and in particular the post-match celebrations in the Scotch club rooms, Dick will present the inaugural cup to the winning captain.
Looking to next week (23rd May) we are back at Bulleen and take on St Bernards, another massive test for the boys. It promises to be another great day and Cookie has again been busy. Lunch will be on again and this time we have landed Lindsay Gaze as our special guest. Ian Cohen is available and will do the Q&A with Lindsay. Don’t miss out on this one, suggest you book in early.
One last thing
TIME TO SAY FAREWELL TO LACH McQUEEN-MISCAMBLE

In closing another big Saturday looms so please join us, Old Scotch awaits our seniors and I know we will be ready. Likewise the 3rds and Unders.
