It was game on and we came away winners!
On paper Round 12 was a break even one for us, 2 wins and 2 losses, but having delved a little deeper I propose we came away as winners. In particular, an enhanced club reputation and plenty of on field enthusiasm.
The seniors had a mighty win over a young St Bernard’s. We have to endure some early pressure from the Bernard’s boys on their home deck before breaking the game open in the 3rd quarter, the 8 goal term allowed us a 7 goal advantage and we were never really again challenged . Having said that there were some ill-behaved Bernard’s people baiting our boys at the ¾ quarter huddle and I am proud of the way in which our playing group handled them without incident or fuss. Like Bernard’s, we too had an in experienced team on the park, our player count grew to 46 after the withdrawal of 2 boys on Saturday morning.
The 2nds are fast developing a greater level of intensity and pushed Bernard’s the entire game, injury and absence has tested our club’s depth. I admire the spirit of the 2nds and the commitment of Coach Jon Remmington, assistant Darren Elsner and the 2nds leadership group, in particular the passion of Zanda and Dmac.
It was a magic day for Ocka and his 3rds, the scene was set for a great game, home, on Dunshae and in perfect conditions. It was Nick England’s 150th game and Life Membership so it was always going to be a big day, what was special was that father Ian was able to coach son, Nick. 150 games and a win, great stuff!
The Unders may not have been able to win against a better performed SKOB’s but the 20 point loss was a massive turnaround to their 130 point loss to SKOB’s earlier in the season.
We received gracious recognition from the St Bernard’s president, Patrick Crabb after the game, Patrick acknowledged Old Carey as a quality A Grade club, a club that St Bernard’s aspires to become.
So looking to this week, Seniors are back at VAFA HQ on SUNDAY to take on ladder leaders Old Xavs, we sit 4th on the ladder by % over Scotch, so it will be a massive game this weekend as we combat a very good team. The 2nds have an equal task whilst the 3rds play away on Saturday to Xavs and the Unders away to Marcellin and confident of a good showing.
No lunch this week due to Sunday’s early start (1.20pm) but there will be an ARVO tea at half time.
Sleep in a little this Sunday, maybe watch some Olympics but DEFINITELY get down to Elsternwick Park and cheer the boys on as we strive to cement our place in the Premier A grade 4.
