Friday 12th July

A week’s break or was it?

Whilst we all enjoyed a weekend away from football that wasn’t the case for 4 of our senior list who were called on to represent the VAFA in a series of nail bitting games v VIC Country. Cam Howat, Lauchie McQueen Miscamble and Ben Smithwick all featured prominently in the 3 point win over the Vic Country’s Premier team whilst James Gaff played his customary running game as part of the VAFA U19 4 point victory over VIC Country.

Whilst we are very proud to have our players represent the club at the higher level it is a nervous time as injuries are inevitable and sadly for us we have paid a very high price.  In the final minutes of the senior’s tense game, our club captain, Cam Howat was bought down in an awkward tackle and has damaged his knee.  Now on crutches and out for the remainder of the season Cam has to endure several months of recovery, whilst the MRI scan did reveal damage to his knee ligaments, Carey alley and leading knee specialist, Andrew Oppy has reviewed Cam’s scans and is confident he will recover without needing surgery.  So its 6 weeks in a brace then a slow recovery period for Cam.  Knowing how professional and committed Cam is, I am sure he will be back up and fully recovered in no time, best of luck Cam.

On the subject of state representation we have been prominent in recent years and have always encouraged and promoted our players wherever possible to play representative football.  Looking at last weekend’s senior team, Old Carey together with Xavs and Blues provided 14 of the 22 players.  Interestingly Old Scotch, Beaumaris and De La Salle had no representation despite being ahead of us on the ladder and having several worthy potential representatives, maybe some clubs have a different mindset to us.

Turning to this weekend, we are back home and face a St Bernards unit that has recently replaced it senior coach.  Seems this has been a trend lately as Uni Blues and Beaumaris followed suit, can’t fathom the replacement of a senior coach mid-season let alone by 3 Premier Clubs.  Not sure what impact that will have on this week’s game; nevertheless it’s a vital game for us both and the result will impact on the relegation stakes! Our 2nds will be out to win against a similar performed team, 3rds likewise also against St Bernards whilst the Unders are coming off a great win and travel to Parkdale to take on the Vultures.

We will recognise this weekend as Multicultural Round, this is an AFL initiative and the VAFA is working in conjunction with the AFL recognising the importance of incorporating different cultures into our competition.  Old Carey like many other clubs has taken to this, recent examples can be seen with several indigenous players that have worn the Panther colours.

At last we are home and again next week where we host St Bedes.  In the meantime lunch this weekend promises to be a beauty, we have dual Brownlow medallist and Carey dad, Peter Moore as our guest.  We will have Carey Bulleen to ourselves as its still school hols; the grounds are in amazing condition so all is set for a cracking day’s footy.

So no excuses see you at Bulleen on Saturday.
