3 wins from 4 but 1 bad loss!

Whilst we can be very pleased with efforts of our 2nds, 3rds and Unders the seniors really blew the chance of securing 2nd spot with a poor showing against a much more determined AJAX.  The day started well with our 2nds winning on Dunshea.  Up in our rooms the luncheon regulars got to hear from Tim Clarke,  Richmond’s VFL coach.  Tim explained or tried to explain what makes Richmond tick, having won the night before everything was positive and Tim gave great insight to his role with the club.  Later on the Unders won well against local rival, Old Camberwell and with the 3rds not playing until Sunday it was up to the seniors to round out the day with a win and secure 2nd spot.

Despite a quick start the seniors were soon chasing a much more determined and well structure AJAX.  Our play makers were very well blanketed and with the loss of Lach McQueen-Miscamble due to suspension combined with no Mathew Laidlaw still another week away we lacked marking options and around ground strength when it mattered.  Despite this Cam Jones played a loan hand as the best tall on the ground and marked everything that came his way.  Down by 5 goals at half time the boys did lift their intensity and pay AJAX a great deal more respect in the 2nd half.  With less than two minutes remaining we had a chance to hit the lead, the shot missed and it was a 12 point turn around as AJAX scored from the kick in.  The boys now need to regroup and set their focus solely on another big match against traditional rival Old Haileybury at home this coming weekend.  The 3rds finished the weekend off with a great win at Bulleen v AJAX, it was game on from the start and our boys played an inspired final quarter to win the game for their coach, Ocka and celebrate Tim Rule’s 100th game.  The photo tells the story.

This Saturday will see the return of our Legends to Bulleen, no match this year, rather a big lunch.  Cookie has again been busy and secured Rodney Eade as our luncheon guest.

This will be our last home game before the final round away to SKOBS.  A win this weekend will almost certainly ensure we secure 2nd and another crack at Blues, a loss and we are really under the pump, destiny is in our hands.  On the subject of the final round, OC and SKOB’s have worked together in recognising two club champions who both passed away in recent months.  The McHarg/McKaige trophy which will be presented in honour of Andrew McHarg (OC) and Mark MKaige (SKOB) by their respective football clubs – Old Carey Grammarians and St Kevin’s Old Boys – to the winning senior team in tomorrow's Round 18 clash at TH King Oval in Glen Iris, SKOB's home ground.   Andrew’s contribution to Old Carey was highly valued both as a distinguished player and life member.  Similarly, Mark’s contribution to SKOB's in the same era was also outstanding. Both men were talented and competitive footballers and went on to fight their respective battles with poor health with true grit and courage. It is this spirit and determination we wish to capture in the striking of this inaugural trophy.

So in closing hard to believe the season’s end is fast approaching, only 2 rounds now remain and as it stands we will play finals but that needs to be secured this weekend for both the Seniors and Unders.  You have a role to play as well so please make the effort and join us at Carey Bulleen, it makes a big difference having you all there with plenty of voice.
