Carey Bulleen must be our fortress

After the poor showing in Round 2 by the club’s senior teams (with the exception of the Unders) it was vital we redeemed ourselves last weekend as we were returning home to Bulleen and back on Dunshea.  And we did:  4 games 4 wins!

Traditionally we have been very hard to beat at home but that has changed in recent times, so we must re-establish that advantage and halt the home ground defeats.  Playing at Carey Bulleen has to be a big advantage for us, shore it’s a ground others can marvel at, however opposing teams must dread playing us at Bulleen.

So after 3 rounds we have registered a combined 9 wins from the 12 games played, in two of the three rounds we have had a clean sweep of wins.  This is a fantastic turnaround from the same time last year and reward for the endeavour and commitment by the boys and coaches.  Whilst the Unders have been our stand out team, currently undefeated, our senior teams by contrast have had to work hard for their wins, playing a mix of good footy combined with some average patches, despite this they have all registered 2 wins each.  All the same we can be pleased with our start but realise we will need to continue to work hard and make sacrifices to keep ourselves competitive.  The boys have already recognised this and have committed to make the necessary sacrifices and extra effort.

Looking to last weekend’s R3 games, it was a great day’s footy at Bulleen.  We had INNEFR FM calling the senior’s game and a packed Cookie’s Kitchen enjoying lunch and listening to current AFL Chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick talk footy.

Despite some early drizzle, playing conditions were very good, so too the ovals.  The 3rds started proceedings with a gutsy win over AJAX whilst the 2nds took control of their game against OM’s coming away deserved winners. It’s the first time we have beaten OM 2nds in many years, they are traditionally a strong unit so the win was notable. The Unders controlled their Old Xavs counterparts and won, now 3 from 3.  As for the seniors game it was a nerve racking win.  Having started well the boys let OM’s back into the game after quarter time and to OM’s credit they then controlled the game for the next two quarters.  The loss of Jarrod Reid up forward early didn’t help our cause. Come 3qtr time we were down 15 points and kicking into the breeze.  OM’s goaled early before we got into gear with Cam Howat and Tom Roach full of run and Lach MM dominating in the air.  These 3 together with Glen Parker’s creative forward play got us across the line, Glen slotted a couple of crucial last quarter goals that had to be kicked, it was pressure stuff.  OM’s regrouped and got the ball forward but we defended desperately keeping them at bay until the final siren.  With all the work that had been done to make R3 a special day at Carey Bulleen the boys played their part to get the wins.  We finished off back at the Geebung with our monthly awards and a few free jugs care of the day’s clean sweep of wins!

Winter looks set to really hit this weekend with some cold weather predicted.  All teams away this weekend before returning to Bulleen Saturday week, May 11th.  This coincides with the Ladies Lunch so please girls no excuses, get in and book early as it will sell out.

Senior teams play Fitzroy in vital games, whilst the 3rds are up against Old Xav’s Premier B 3rds and the Unders away to Therry.  Check below for the venues, rug up and get there, come Saturday PANTHER footy is up and about again we need you there in numbers!
