Good preparation for some testing times ahead
In registering a second consecutive 100 point win last weekend, the seniors are well primed for another crack at Uni Blues this Saturday at the Uni. Looking back to the R2 clash at Bulleen the Blues won comfortably, playing an A grade game of ran and spread and using pin point passing skills, they regularly run the ball hard out of defence on angles and kicked precisely to their forwards. The Blues are not a monster team, rather very well drilled and very skilful with multiply on ballers. Round 2 our 2nd game under Glenn as new coach and with several new players we weren’t at our best. We have played well in patches since then but have dropped games we should have won, however in the last 2 game we have really lifted our intensity and decision making. Having both Jarrod Reid and Happy Laidlaw deep in our forward line has added strength and goal scoring possibilities. James Courtot is getting better each week and the defence is well settled with James Murrie playing good football after a bad hamstring. So it is time to test ourselves again against Blues, the top team. I know the coaches and players are excited and keen to see how our improved game plan and skills will hold up.
The 2nds had a bad loss to Fitzroy last week and have made life tough for themselves in terms of playing finals. Sitting currently 5th the boys are only 4 points adrift of OMs but a large % differential. They really needed to win last week given the boys now play Blues who are top and SKOBs who are 2nd in the remaining 4 games. Still the list is good and the boys still believe they can so time will tell. The 3rds had a very bad day, perhaps a letdown after Shrugga’s 400th win the previous week. The club had several boys away at a music festival which was felt by the 3rds given the knock on selection effect. Despite the bad loss Ocka and his team will front up again, this time looking to repeat the win the other week when they take on Old Trinity again. The Unders got back on track with a dominant win over Old Xavs, Mitchell Nixon bagged 9 snags and taking his season’s total to 66 goals. Taz and his boys can now use the remaining rounds to find form and some games across the list as they prepare for a crack at finals.
The highlight of the weekend was Cookie’s lunch where a full house of 70 plus was entertained by the Dipper. Michael Gordon (Political Editor of The Age) did a great job interviewing Dipper and delving into Dipper’s junior days plus some great stories of his time in the AFL and his grand final appearances. Michael is a passionate Hawks fan and has written several wonderful books on the club’s history, most recently “Playing to Win” the inside story of the Hawks 11th premiership.
Cookie’s not done yet for 2014, he hopes to have Damien Hardwick and Tim Clarke as our next luncheon guests, August 9 v AJAX and close the season out with Rodney Eade for the Legends Lunch on August 16, so please watch out for the invites and RSVP quickly.
Another thing we need you to do is buy a ticket in our $5 grand in the hand reverse raffle. Wes Mudge is overseeing this very important fund raiser. So please dig deep (again) and buy a ticket, the club relies on this event to contribute in covering our costs, which are plenty! Contact Wes, either email to WM@jeffreythomas.com.au or 0417 513 218. The raffle will be draw at the Geebung Hotel from 1pm Sunday 17th August.
Turning to this week, as reported above we head to Melbourne Uni to take on the Blues in a massive game. The 2nds will be in another must win or do well game and protect their %, 3rds set to take revenge on Trinity and the Unders away to St Mary’s Salesian. If you follow the seniors then get to the main oval at Melbourne Uni, the new Pavvy is open and well worth a look. The boys are focused and ready for a challenge again so please come along and do your bit.
